Welcome to the Complex Adaptive Systems Group. We study the dynamics of systems of adaptive agents. Our current investigations include understanding the dynamics of crowds and aggregate movement (or swarming) and the properties of self-organizing information systems. This latter study has led us to investigate the nature of trust in systems where agents may be malicious.
Our main tools for investigation are agent-based modelling, simulation and mathematics. Our purpose in studying these systems is to understand the properties of self-organization and information propagation. We apply our research to the development of improved search algorithms, information retrieval systems and applications in the area of real time system management and control.
Our work has resulted in patents currently held by Ottawa high technology companies.
Our lab is in the Herzberg building, room 5325.
